QuickMonth Calendar

QuickMonth Calendar screenshot

QuickMonth Calendar is a freeware program which displays a small calendar on your Windows desktop whenever your mouse hovers over the clock in the system tray.  The calendar display may also be toggled on and off by using the Windows+Q keyboard shortcut or a different key combination that you specify.

Get QuickMonth Calendar now by visiting the download page.  QuickMonth Calendar is free and does not include any adware or spyware.

NOTE: Some antivirus programs have incorrectly detected QuickMonth Calendar as a Trojan horse.  Do not be alarmed — this type of erroneous detection is called a false positive.  If you receive an virus warning message regarding QuickMonth Calendar (qmc.exe), please report the false positive to your antivirus software manufacturer so they can update their definitions.

Features

Here are a few of QuickMonth Calendar's features:

  • To quickly jump to today's date, right-click on the calendar or left-click the bottom of the calendar where it says "Today."
  • Use the buttons at the top of the calendar to change the month.  You can also left-click on the name of the month to see a popup menu of all the months (see example 1).
  • Left-click on the year to quickly change the year (see example 2).
  • The calendar automatically detects the location of your Windows taskbar, so if you move the taskbar to the top, left, or right side of the screen, the calendar will still display next to your system tray clock (you may have to restart Windows once for the change to take effect).
  • The look of the calendar changes according to what your system colors are (as determined by your current Windows theme or visual style).

Feel free to leave any comments, suggestions, bug reports, etc. below.  If you like QuickMonth Calendar, I would like to know.  Thank you!

Thanks! simple and usefull.

Ryan on 11-Mar-08

Hey! Kaspersky just flagged your qmc.exe as having a Trojan - Spy.Win32.Agent.bpm. Think this is an error? I downloaded it from this site!

Steve Waskow on 12-Mar-08

I am getting a virus alert from my F-Secure antivirus software on the ZIP file I just downloaded and on the previous installation of your product. I assume this is erroneous, but you probably want to check it out. I can send you a screen-shot of the error message if it would help. Regards, Steve

Greg on 12-Mar-08

Does not work properly with widescreen LCD monitors. Calendar opens up in center of screen.

Justin Rodes on 13-Mar-08

@Ryan: I have both AVG and ThreatFire on my system; neither of them are detecting my qmc.exe as infected. It is possible that it is a false positive from Kaspersky; I will contact them about it. Just to be sure, I recommend you run a full scan on your computer.

@Steve: I think (hope) this also is a false positive. I will follow up with F-Secure to make sure. Likewise, I recommend you run a full scan on your system.

@Greg: I don't know why the calendar would be opening in the center of your screen. By default the calendar is programmed to open up adjacent to your taskbar. Make sure you have the most recent version of QuickMonth Calendar installed (should be 1.3). As a last resort you can use the /x and /y command line options to set where you want the calendar to appear. I'm sorry I can't help with the problem unless I can reproduce it somehow.

Justin Rodes on 13-Mar-08

@Greg: I have an idea; if your monitor's resolution or DPI changes at any time after QuickMonth Calendar starts, this may affect the position where the calendar appears. Try this:

1) Right-click on the calendar and choose Exit from the context menu, or end the qmc.exe task using Windows Task Manager.
2) Restart QuickMonth Calendar (Start menu > All Programs > Startup > QuickMonth Calendar -- in WinXP)
3) Test where the calendar appears when you hover the mouse pointer over your system tray clock. It should appear in the correct location.

If your monitor adjusts its resolution while Windows is starting, this may be causing your problem.

@All: I found out that the virus alerts were indeed false positives. I will post the details on the codedawn.com home page.

Very usefull Justin, I wished for something like this and now it's here. Maybe you could also do something with a clock that would integrate itself in an applications' title bar or status bar. Good luck to you and keep up the good work.

Great little app. Saves me going to outlook calendar every time I want to check on a date. I have been wanting something like this for a while now.

Greg on 15-Apr-08

Is there any way of having a delay for the calendar so that it does not pop up right away when the cursor is moved over to that corner of the screen, say to go to the lower right corner of their web browser window?

Justin Rodes on 15-Apr-08

@Greg: Yes, you can set a delay for the calendar.  See my post on QuickMonth Calendar 1.4 for details.

Allan Carley on 15-Apr-08

Just discovered this little jewel from PCWorld. Pretty slick. However, one little nit to pick.
The screenshots show today's date enclosed with a rectangle. My copy justs draws a messy oval around the date. It's not very pretty. Is there a way to provide a "switch" to toggle between a rectangle and an oval?
I'm using Windows 2000 Professional, by the way.
Thanks.

Justin Rodes on 15-Apr-08

@Allan: The selection style of the date depends on your operating system. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to control it; the "messy oval" is just how Windows 2000 displays it. To get the rectangle you have to be using Windows XP (or Vista?).

David Ludwig on 17-Apr-08

Very nice. The only issue I have is with a dual screen monitor setup it displays too far above the taskbar and 1/2 way into the other monitor.

Justin Rodes on 17-Apr-08

@David: Try rebooting your system, or exit QuickMonth Calendar and start it again--that will force the calendar to recalculate it's position--and see if that fixes it. If that doesn't help, you can specify your preferred screen coordinates of where the calendar should appear by using the command line options.

Len Steele on 21-Apr-08

I can get the pop-up of the listing of the twelve months, but clicking on a month (right or left) does nothing, i.e. nothing is displayed, the month listing simply goes away. Any idea(s)?

Justin Rodes on 22-Apr-08

@Len: That's a good question. By default, QuickMonth Calendar reverts back to today's date after it disappears, which is why changing the month with the popup menu seems to be not working. There are 2 ways you can resolve this:

1) You can use the /norevert command line option with QuickMonth Calendar. This way, changing the month with the popup menu will work even if the calendar disappears.

2) Otherwise, you will need to press the keyboard shortcut once (usually Windows+Q) to keep the calendar open while you change the month with the popup menu, then press the keyboard shortcut again to hide the calendar when you are done using it.

Also, remember that you can always go forward and backward through the months using the left and right arrow buttons on the calendar.

Too good

jeevan on 30-Apr-08

Great tool !!

An idea for a cool feature:
Upon right-clicking a date, a pop-up menu will come up with customized options for manipulating the chosen date. One option can be marked as default - for use with double-click.

For example: a user will be able to add an "Outlook Appointment" option, and mark it as default.
Upon double clicking a date, the program will run an Outlook.exe command with parameters that will create a new appointment in that day.

It can be fun, no?

Thanx !!

Mr Plow on 06-May-08

I'm getting (what I presume is) a false positive from McAfee VirusScan Enterprise + AntiSpyware Enterprise 8.5.0i, whereupon it deletes the qmc.exe file!!

How annoying! I've updated the DAT files for McAfee and DLed the latest QMC but it's still deleting the EXE as soon as the installer unpacks it to my system!

Gaetan on 06-May-08

I am getting an alert from McAfee (DAT file 5289 2008/05/06), that qmc.exe is infected by the W32/YahLover.worm trojan.

Please could you comment?

Thank you for your great little app.

Gaétan

Justin Rodes on 06-May-08

@Mr Plow, Gaétan: Yes, it is most certainly a false positive.

Please contact McAfee to notify them of the false positive and request that they update their definitions so qmc.exe is no longer detected as harmful.
I contacted them, but they wouldn't help because "I'm not a registered customer." Poor service indeed--other antivirus companies have been much more cooperative.

Wingless Wonder on 06-May-08

I am using the same McAfee DAT version 5289.0000 as Gaetan posted above, McAfee engine version 5200.2160, and QMC was quarantined and flagged as W32/YahLover.worm, also.

George Hyman on 07-May-08

I've reported the false positive to McAfee - incident id 137504729.

Justin Rodes on 07-May-08

@Wingless Wonder: Please report the false positive to McAfee and request that they update their detections. The more people who contact McAfee about this, the more likely they are to fix this problem.

@George Hyman: Thank you!

Gaetan on 08-May-08

I have reported the false positive to McAfee. Please read their answer :

McAfee Avert(tm)
Issue Number: *******
Virus Research Analyst: *. ******
Filename: qmc.exe
Detected: W32/YahLover.worm trojan
Identified: No Virus/Trojan
McAfee Avert(tm) Labs, Aylesbury, UK

Thank you for submitting your suspicious file.

Synopsis -

Our Senior Virus Research Engineers have examined the file in question and no virus was found.

Solution -

Attached is an extra.dat with correct detection. This correction will be included in the next DAT update.

Gaetan on 08-May-08

Good news, the most recent update of the McAfee virus definitions no more detects any virus / trojan in QMC.

John on 08-May-08

Mcafee is removing your program calling it a trojan. I'm at a loss as how to stop this annoying removal.

Ryan on 14-May-08

Nice program, but why is it getting about 130 context switches per second even when I do nothing? Is it listening to way too many events? AutoHotKey does all kinds of crazy stuff and it sits completely idle (no context switches) until I hit a key.

Richard Straus on 14-May-08

Great program thanks.. Problem, the date on "today" is in European format. ie: 14/4/2008. How do I correct this? RHS

Mindblower on 15-May-08

I'd like to see Today as 15 May 08 instead of 15/05/2008. Is this possible and how?
