Menu Icons Plus

Menu Icons Plus icon

Menu Icons Plus iconifies your Firefox menus and more!  It includes 3 different icons sets to choose from, along with the ability to import/export icon sets.  It also provides options for changing other aspects of the toolbars' and menus' appearance, like combining the Stop and Reload buttons on the navigation bar or hiding the bookmark button in the location bar.

How to use Menu Icons Plus

Once it is installed, start Firefox and open the Add-ons list from the Tools menu.
Select Menu Icons Plus and click the Options button (or Preferences button in Linux).
Here you can change which icon set to use for the menu icons, and set different preferences for how the toolbars and menus appear.
Click the OK button (or Close button in Linux); if your changes don't take effect right away, restarting Firefox should do the trick.

Note:  Some options may be incompatible with Firefox themes that deviate a lot from the standard theme.  Also, Menu Icons Plus has some bugs yet to be worked out on Windows Vista.  It should be fine on Windows XP or Linux, however.

I like it! it is more appealing.

Nice extension! But option to use icons from the default theme where possible works only until firefox is restarted. AFter the restart the icons from the selected theme are back.

Justin Rodes on 27-Jul-08

@kaye_styles: Thank you for the bug report. This is fixed now (in version 1.1).

Very nice. Two bug reports:

1. When using the alternate selection schemes, the Fx 3 history dropdown menu is separated from the back/forward buttons. 2. When using the StumbleUpon toolbar, the icons appear closer together when Menu Icons Plus is enabled. It could actually be a feature, provided there was a way to return the appearance to the default.

@Nathan B.

Thank you for the bug report. What theme are you using when the history dropdown menu appears separated? Are you using large or small icons on the toolbars? And do you have icons and text showing for the toolbar buttons, or just the icons? Please let me know; you can contact me at http://www.codedawn.com/contact/ or leave another comment here.

I'm using the default Fx 3 theme with small icons, no text.

Justin Rodes on 08-Aug-08

@Nathan B: I'm sorry, but I am unable to reproduce the problem with the history dropdown. Possibly it's an incompatibility with another extension you have installed.

Four things MIP needs to become a suitable CuteMenus - Crystal SVG replacement and to coax me into switching:

1.) A complete CuteMenus - Crystal SVG theme.
2.) Extension support.
3.) Icons for ALL stock menu items.
4.) Transparent/grayscale disabled icons.

Any chance we'll see these features in the near-future? :)

Justin Rodes on 05-Sep-08

@blackwind:
1.) The goal of Menu Icons Plus is not necessarily to replace CuteMenus-Crystal SVG, but to provide an alternative for those who prefer it. Having said that, it wouldn't be too hard for someone to create a custom icon theme for Menu Icons Plus based on Crystal SVG, if they wanted to.
2.) Please let me know which extensions you have found that are lacking support. Most of the popular extensions are already supported.
3.) The ideal, according to usability and user interface design principles, is not to provide icons for ALL menu items but rather the most-used ones. Also, I wanted to stay away from repeatedly using the same icon for different menu commands, just for the sake of giving every one an icon--it reduces the identifiability of those menu items.
4.) The disabled icons are already set to 50% opacity by default.

I'd like to report a couple of bugs:

1.) When I using Menu Icons Plus, all buttons become slightly wider with the text slightly off-center to the right. Perhaps one or two hidden spaces or an invisible image/icon are being added to the front of every button?

2.) The alignment on checkboxes and radio buttons are off to the left significantly.

Both of these bugs occur on fresh installs of Firefox 3 with Menu Icons Plus on Windows Vista. I've tried to see what I could do to patch them using Stylish, but all I managed to was make even more bizarre results.

A picture of said two bugs can be found here:

Best of luck to you if you can fix them.

Can you give some tutorial or explanation on how to create custom icon sets?

There is a problem with the Add Bookmark Here² Extension… the entry "Add Bookmark Here..." in the Bookmarksmenu duplicates itself.

Charlie on 03-Nov-08

This extension is great, I really love it,however,no matter what theme I use, I always have to go back to your options menu and change the icons and the scheme, and the bookmark remover every time I restart Firefox. Also, no matter what theme I use, the icons never change, only the one I have for IE View

Gordon Bennet on 12-Nov-08

I love this extension, but it stopped working after last update (11th November). I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall, but couldn't. I'm grateful for all the work those who produce Firefox add-ons do, so not complaining here! I'll be glad to sort out a fix.
